If, like me, you sometimes find yourself starting your day with a clear vision of tasks to complete and things to achieve only to reach the evening with a to-do list that doesn’t seem to have got any shorter, then you may be a victim of focus-destroying distractions and conflicting priorities that are fighting for your time and attention. Your morning may be full of determination, energy and concentration, but after a couple of hours an email or a phone call may side-track you into doing something else – and you find yourself struggling to refocus and go back to the original plan.
Thankfully, a simple reminder of the Most Important Thing that you have planned for the day can help you regain your focus and work your way through that to-do list. Almost by chance, I came across a Google Chrome extension called Momentum, and it does just that.
Momentum replaces Chrome’s default new tab screen with a clean interface, which you can customise to use your name to greet you (a very nice touch) and location to show weather. Its key features, however, are the Main Focus reminder and the to-do list. Once you’ve entered your main goal for the day into the field positioned strategically in the middle of the screen, you will see that goal every time you open a new tab or launch the browser. In addition, your to-do list can be displayed on the screen at the same time – giving you a further reminder of your priorities. Even after numerous distractions, you will still remember what your main focus should be, and you will be able to get back to it very quickly as a result.
As an added bonus, Momentum comes with a set of very attractive background images that change daily – a very welcome change from Chrome’s rather plain default tab screen.
Combined with a self-timing method such as the Pomodoro technique, Momentum may be one of the best things you can do to boost your productivity.
